Training Overview
Confined spaces can pose significant hazards if not properly understood and managed. Our Confined Space (CS) Awareness Training equips workers with the knowledge to recognize and assess confined spaces, identify potential hazards, and implement safe work practices.
Why do I need Fit Testing?
Fit testing is a requirement for any Ontario employees who will be wearing tight-fighting respirators to protect them from biological or chemical hazards, whether they choose to use disposable or reusable respirators (s.12(1) of R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 833 CONTROL OF EXPOSURE TO BIOLOGICAL OR CHEMICAL AGENTS | ontario.ca). This fit testing procedure helps ensure the individual has selected the correct size respirator for their face and that a proper seal can be made around it in order to provide the protection expected of the product and appropriate for the specific danger.
At Elite, we complete Qualitative Fit Testing (QLFT) services, meaning it is applicable to the following to situations
- Negative-pressure, air-purifying respirators, used in atmospheres where the specified danger is at 1/10th or less than the permissible exposure limit (PEL).
- Tight-fitting facepieces used with powered and atmosphere-supplying respirators.
How the Test Works
The test uses the individual’s sense of smell and taste to determine adequate filtration and seal. Elite provides a Saccharin (sweet taste) or Bitrex® (bitter taste), both of which can test respirators with a particulate filter of any class.
The QLFT method uses seven exercises performed for 1 minute each:
- Normal breathing.
- Deep breathing.
- Turning head side to side.
- Moving head up and down.
- Talking.
- Bending over (or jogging in place if fit test unit doesn’t permit bending at the waist).
- Normal breathing again.
