Alberta’s Water Program is now accepting applications for its On-Farm Irrigation Stream. This initiative is designed to help Alberta farmers enhance water management practices, protect water quality, improve resource efficiency, and build resilience to climate change.

What Is the On-Farm Irrigation Stream?
The On-Farm Irrigation Stream provides financial support to primary producers in Alberta who are investing in efficient irrigation systems. With up to $35,000 in funding available per fiscal year, this stream empowers farmers to adopt sustainable technologies that boost productivity and conserve water.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be a primary producer in Alberta.
- Own and operate an irrigated farm in the province.
- Generate at least $25,000 annually in gross farm income from crops or livestock.
- Be responsible for input costs (landowners who lease land are not eligible).
- Not have received funding for the same type of project on the same parcel of land.
Funding Breakdown
Eligible producers can receive:
- Up to $17,500 per parcel for new irrigation system purchases (50% of eligible expenses).
- Up to $6,000 per parcel for irrigation system upgrades (50% of eligible expenses).
All funding is provided on a cost-share basis: 50% grant and 50% applicant contribution.
Important Details
- Only expenses dated after April 1, 2023 are eligible.
- All invoices must be issued under the Legal Name listed on the application.
- Applicants must provide proof of a 10% down payment for all eligible expenses.
- Indigenous applicants are encouraged to apply, flexible support is available.
