Calls for PIDs a legitimate request
Some producers who’ve received letters are questioning their authenticity
In the past few weeks, many producers and farm businesses have received letters by mail concerning premises IDs (PIDs) with the Provincial Premises Registry (PPR). Some have questioned this as fraudulent, however, it’s a legitimate request for an update, supported by Agricorp as a means of safeguarding producers from emergencies, such as disease outbreaks.
Why this is important
Food security and biosecurity have become important components with agri-food production. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Avian influenza outbreak currently affecting poultry flocks in the U.S., the need for greater security with agricultural production has taken on greater emphasis. Proper and current identification of farms is an important step in that bid for higher and tighter security.
This is why producers in Ontario are being encouraged to update their information with the Provincial Premises Registry (PPR) initiative. It’s a collaborative effort among farmers, stakeholders, Agricorp and government to maintain a record of agricultural activities by location, creating a foundation for swift emergency responses. In the event of an incident like weather disasters, animal or plant disease outbreaks or contaminated food, identifying potential sites or sources quickly and effectively is paramount.
Information tied to PID numbers is requested to be updated at least every two years, or as it changes (with changes in commodities, etc). Again, it is not fraudulent: it’s legitimate and helps ensure the integrity of the registry.
